For many years, I had a dream: To produce my own newsletter, in addition to freelance writing I had already been doing for other people for the past 20 yearsl to write content that other women in this phase of life (aka midlife women who are smart, involved, curious, interested and interesting) would love to read. Even though thePause newsletter was going to be read, I wanted it to be more like you were hearing my voice – at times serious, sarcastic, irreverent – but always genuine.

Oftentimes as dreams go,  the fine details take time to surface, percolate and evolve. Finally, spurred by the pandemic of 2020 – if not NOW, WHEN? – I produced the very first issue. Just weeks after that, I documented my bout with COVID (I like to be trending like that…), and was interviewed for an article in the New York Times.

Jennifer, my original partner in crime, has since moved on for other endeavors, but I (Sheryl) remain the voice of thePause, bringing decades of health writing experience (and personal health experience) to share with thePause’s readership. Of course, I’m not the only voice out there, and occasionally, I’ll be adding to my voice with other experts in the field of women’s health, fitness, nutrition and more!

Each day brings new subscribers and new feedback. That makes me feel good, and it makes me feel heard, too, because, as a long-time journalist, I’m used to sitting alone behind my computer, spewing out content to (what feels like) the netherworld. And knowing that someone is really listening makes me smile, and gives me the impetus to keep writing.

thePause covers a myriad of topics: menopause, weight struggles, hearing loss and self-esteem, just as a start. I talk about what’s on my mind – and what’s probably on your mind, too.
